Posted on 22:52 by Unknown
New Delhi: The government today said there will be a demand of 4.7 lakh cyber security professionals by 2015 for protection of IT infrastructure in the country as well as to serve the export market.

Taking into account the requirement emerging for protection of information technology infrastructure in the country as well as to serve the export market, a demand for 4.7 lakh cyber security professionals has been estimated by the year 2015," Minister of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

He said a number of attempts of cyber attacks of various natures are being observed on the IT infrastructure deployed in various sectors of economy including national security in the country from different sources.

"The cyber warfare is indeed emerging as one of the major challenges for all the nations," Deora said.

Google allows 10GB attachments in Gmail

Posted on 21:56 by Unknown

NEW DELHI: Do you feel the 25MB limit for attachments in Gmail is not enough? Well Google seems to have heard your prayers. The search giant has integrated Google Drive-based attachments in its email service so that users can now send files up to 10GB in size. Google Drive is the company's cloud storage service, similar to Microsoft SkyDrive and DropBox.

On the official Gmail blog, Phil Sharp, Gmail product manager, posted: "you can insert files from Drive directly into an email without leaving your Gmail." He added, "...with Drive, you can insert files up to 10GB -- 400 times larger than what you can send as a traditional attachment. Also, because you're sending a file stored in the cloud, all your recipients will have access to the same, most-up-to-date version."

In case all the recipients of the mail do not have access to the file in Google Drive, Gmail will prompt the user so the requisite settings can be altered from the open message box itself. Moreover, users also have the option of simply pasting the links of Google Drive files they want to share with the mail recipients in the compose box.

As of now, Google has only integrated Google Drive-based attachment feature in the new compose box. Therefore, users who had opted out of the new look of compose box need to opt for it once again in order to mail Google Drive-based files. Those who want to mail files bigger than 25MB in size need to transfer them to Google Drive in order to send them via Gmail.

India plans 61 times faster supercomputer by 2017

Posted on 07:58 by Unknown

The government has drawn a blueprint for developing the next generation of supercomputers that could be 61 times faster than existing machines.

Telecom and IT minister Kapil Sibal is understood to have written to Prime MinisterManmohan Singh sharing the roadmap to develop "petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers" at an estimated cost of Rs 4,700 crore over 5 years.
"In his (Sibal) letter, he has said that C-DAC has developed a proposal with a roadmap to develop a petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers in the country with an outlay of Rs 4,700 crore," a government official said.

A petaflop is a measure of a computer s processing speed and can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second. Exaflop is one quintillion computer operations per second. Simply put, one exaflop is thousand times faster than one petaflop.

The fastest supercomputer in the world, Sequoia, has registered a top computing speed of 16.32 petaflops, which is equivalent of computing of power from over 7.8 lakhs high-end laptops put together.

If the Indian government approves building exaflop supercomputers, these will be at least 61 times faster than Sequoia, officials said.

India's top supercomputer at present ranks 58th globally in terms of computing speed.

Sibal has cited the past record of Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) which was set up in 1987 by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi after technologically advanced nations denied supply of supercomputer to India in mid-1980s.

"The Minister has written that C-DAC developed first supercomputers in the country, the Param series. Presently Param Yuva with 54 teraflop computing power is serving many researchers through Garuda Computing Grid," the official said.

Sibal has proposed that Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) should be given tasks to coordinate overall supercomputing activities in the country as it has been done in the past.

The proposal made in the letter says that DEITY should be given tasks to set up a National Apex Committee to oversee the implementation of the proposed Supercomputing Mission and C- DAC should establish peta and exascale supercomputing facilities and development activities.

Posted on 23:19 by Unknown
Washington: Google’s Android operating system will be used on more computing devices than Microsoft’s Windows within four years, data from research firm Gartner showed on Wednesday, underlining the massive shift in the technology sector.

At the end of 2016, there will be 2.3 billion computers, tablets and smartphones using Android software, compared with 2.28 billion Windows devices, Gartner data showed.

That compares to an expected 1.5 billion Windows devices by the end of this year, against 608 million using Android. Android, which reached the market only in 2008, has risen fast to be the dominant smartphone platform, controlling two-thirds of that market. It has taken the No. 2 spot in the fast-growing tablet computer market.

At the end of 2016, there will be 2.3 billion computers, tablets and smartphones using Android software.

Android to beat Windows in 2016: Report

The proliferation of the free software gives Google its edge on the search market – its key profit generator. Worldwide shipments of personal computers fell by over 8 percent in the third quarter, the steepest decline since 2001, as more consumers flock to increasingly powerful tablets and smartphones for more basic computing.

Microsoft’s Windows has dominated the personal computer industry for decades, but the company has struggled to keep up with shift to wireless, and in smartphones its market share is around 3 percent.

One slight drawback that some may point out is that this product is somewhat heavier as compared to other 15” laptops but this is probably due to the fact that the machine is quite well built.

So give it a shot if you are looking for a high-end portable gaming machine.

MSI GE70

The GE70 is another gaming beast by MSI that will give you an ultimate gaming experience. Compared to the MSI product mentioned above, this machine wears a much more affordable price tag.

2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX670M discrete graphics with 3GB GDDR5 VRAM, 12GB DDR3 RAM (1600 MHz), and 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD) + 750GB HDD (7200RPM), GE70 has the firepower to run every latest game available. All you wanted to know about Windows 8 !!!

Posted on 22:58 by Unknown
New York: This week, Microsoft will release a new version of its Windows operating system, one designed to make desktop and laptop computers work more like tablets. It represents the software company’s effort to address the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers, namely the iPad.

The new software is a radical departure from previous versions of Windows. The familiar start menu on the lower left corner is gone, and people will have to swipe the edges of the screen to access various settings. There will be a new screen filled with a colourful array of tiles, each leading to a different application, task or collection of files. Windows 8 is designed especially for touch screens, though it will work with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts, too.

There will be several versions of Windows 8:

Windows 8
Like its predecessors, Windows 8 will run on computers with processing chips made by Intel or Advanced Micro Devices. There’s a basic version designed for consumers and a Pro version for more tech-savvy users and businesses. The Pro version has such features as encryption and group account management. Large companies with volume-licensing deals with Microsoft will want Windows 8 Enterprise, which has additional tools for information-technology staff to manage machines.

Windows RT

For the first time, there will also be a version running on lower-energy chips common in phones and tablets. That version will run on tablets and some devices that marry tablet and PC features. While tablets with Windows 8 can run standard Windows programs, the RT devices will be restricted to applications specifically designed for the system. Borrowing from Apple, Microsoft is allowing RT to get applications only from its online store, and apps must meet content and other guidelines.

Windows Phone 8
While Windows 8 and RT will be out on Friday, the phone version won’t be available until an unspecified date this fall. Microsoft has an event on it Monday and may announce more details then. Nokia and Samsung Electronics already have announced plans for new Windows phones.

You can get Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 only by buying devices with the software already installed, while Windows 8 can be purchased as an upgrade as well.

Here’s how you can get – or avoid getting – Windows 8:

Buy a new PC:
Desktop, laptop and tablet computers with Windows 8 already installed will go on sale on Friday. Several PC manufacturers including Samsung, Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Dell already have announced details about their new machines, while retailers have trained staff to explain and demonstrate the new system. Microsoft will also have its Surface tablet with Windows RT out, with a Windows 8 version coming later.

Upgrade your PC:
Those who have bought a Windows 7 PC (other than the Starter Edition) since June 2 will be able to buy Windows 8 Pro for Rs 699. The offer applies to Windows 7 PCs sold until January 31, and the upgrade must be claimed by February 28.
To claim the offer, register the machine at https://windowsupgradeoffer.com. You’ll get an email with a promo code, which you can use to get the Windows 8 upgrade online.

Those who bought a Windows PC before June 2 will be able to upgrade for $39.99 (Rs 2150 approximately). You must already have Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Those who prefer buying a DVD to upgrade will have to pay $69.99 (Rs 3800 approximately).

Before buying the upgrade, check to make sure your machine is strong enough to run Windows 8. Microsoft lists the system requirements here.

Not sure if you have what it takes? Microsoft has an upgrade tool that will stop you if you try to buy Windows 8 without the requirements. The tool will also warn you of software that might need updates to work on Windows 8. Go to http://windows.com starting Friday to get started.

If you’re upgrading from Windows 7, the tool will let you keep settings, personal files and applications. You can migrate settings and files from Vista and files only from XP. You’ll also have the option to start fresh and bring nothing to Windows 8.

Keep older Windows:

Do nothing if you do not wish to upgrade to Windows 8. After Windows 8 is out, most machines on sale will have that version of Windows.

It will be possible to buy Windows 7 machines or upgrade to Windows 7, though you may have order online and your choices may be restricted to gaming or business-oriented machines.

Microsoft hasn’t said what the cutoff date for Windows 7 will be, but expect to be able to buy Windows 7 as an upgrade for another year or preinstalled on a new machine for two more years.

After Windows 7 came out in October 2009, for instance, retailers were still allowed to sell boxed versions of the predecessor, Vista, until October 2010. PC makers were able to sell Vista machines until October 2011.

Microsoft plans to continue providing technical support for Windows 7 until 14 January, 2020.
